Single mothers must deal with a host of unique challenges, not the least of which is finding a way to better themselves with more education. In fact, it is often the cost of college tuition that leaves many single mothers desperate to improve their job situation and financial status. It is fortunate then that there are a number of financial aid resources available specifically for single mothers.
This article will list 7 scholarships available to single mothers. Take a look at each one and may do some more research. Perhaps, one or more of them would be worth the time for application.

The Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship Fund – Single Parent Scholarships are awarded to eligible single parents living in the state of Arkansas. If you are a single mother living in that state and you’re interested in applying for the Single Parent Scholarship, you should locate your county on the map at www.aspf.org/students_spscholarships.html. You can determine if it is something you’d like to pursue.
The Jeanette Rankin Foundation Scholarship Program – Since 1978, the Jeannette Rankin Foundation has been awarding scholarship to help over 500 women get a college education. Those interested can apply between November through February each year. Even though it isn’t specifically targeted at single mothers, you may just qualify if you fit in the subset category for single women 35 years or older.
The Pell Grant – Naturally, single mothers are eligible for the Federal Pell Grant. This federal grant does not have to be repaid.
The R.O.S.E. Scholarship – The R.O.S.E. Scholarship Program provides financial assistance to women who have overcome domestic violence in their lives and who attend colleges or universities in the New England area. The scholarships are mainly given to women who have successfully completed one full year of undergraduate studies. The scholarship is applied to tuition and expenses at any accredited college or university in the Northeast.
Sunshine Lady Foundation Scholarship – The SUNSHINE LADY Foundation, Inc. is a private family foundation that was established back in late 1996 by the founder and President, Doris Buffett. Buffett was a long-time advocate who worked on behalf of battered women and their children. She was a frequent fund-raiser, board member and community organizer. The foundation was established as a force to fight against domestic violence while developing and enhancing the lives of the victims. Additional funding priorities of the Foundation have included primary education, scholarships and families in crisis. The scholarship amounts and the number of recipients vary from year to year.
Soroptimist Women‘s Opportunity Award – This scholarship presents $10,000 to up to three women who need assistance paying for college or secondary education. Soroptimist h as operated a 501(c)(3) organization from its base of operation in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for many year now. The organization offers programs that improve social and economic conditions for women and girls.
The scholarships mentioned here are very well known, but they are just a small selection of those that are being offered to single mothers annually.
